Focus on Confederate monuments
The Kudzu Project is participating in a symposium at the University of Virginia on April 19-20, 2018. Organized by the Department of Religious Studies, Toppling Monuments: A symposium on history, memory and the power of images, will address perspectives on iconoclasm from antiquity to the present with a special focus on the recent debates about Confederate statues. The Kudzu Project will be part of the Thursday evening session held at Harrison Auditorium from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
On April 11, Katie Couric's documentary series America Inside Out premiers with an episode about Confederate statues and the white supremacist protests in Charlottesville last summer. Charlottesville residents were treated to a preview of Re-righting History, sponsored by the Virginia Film Festival, on April 4 at the Paramount Theater. A panel featuring Couric and local residents who were interviewed by her for the documentary spoke after the screening. One section of Re-righting History deals with the movement to rename schools that were named after Confederate leaders and Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton is among the schools mentioned. The episode will be aired at 10 pm EST on the National Geographic channel.
